Can Ansys do optimization..like for small problems?
I need to change the materials properties and slight changes in the geometry and would like to look at the deflection on a composite (shell99) beam model.
could someone give me a primer on this. thanks
I think it can. But mostly, what I have seen is to use other optimization codes along with ansys. I'm no expert though.
calling ansys everytime you need to evaluate a function is suicidal. But I've seen people using genetic algorithm with simple ansys scripts

I working to ANSYS Classic from couple years, and is a very powerful instrument. Unfortunely, dont exist enough material to learn good and corectly this software.
Returning to your question, in ANSYS Classic are three wais to made an optimisation: topological optimisation, probabilistic design and design optimisation. Function of problem, you can choice one of this optimisation, or you can maded by all three (is much more dificult and implicate very much knowledge).
